Hey everyone,

So during feeding time today, one of my axolotls bit the other and it seems like he broke his arm :( I feel so terrible for the poor thing, I have no idea what to now!

Please, any advice would be appreciated

Can you post photos? If it's not broken it'll heal itself. If it's badly broken it might drop off and regrow, but if it's broken and doesn't seem to be fixing or coming off you may as a very last resort need to amputate it for him so he can grow a new one.

I uploaded to imgur for higher quality. It is very badly broken and it's honestly torturing me to see him like this!! I will be separating them now during feeding time, but the damage is already done.

This only happened today, but I can't stand the thought of how much pain the poor animal must be in right now

Here are the pictures

PS: pardon the dirty aquarium, I am in the middle of cleaning it

Perhaps remove it yourself? A lot of people don't like others saying that. But in reality it would have been better if your axolotl had bitten it clean off. It won't regrow with it still hanging on.

I can't tell from the photos if it's broken or whether it's just had a chunk bitten out of it. You can usually see bone if it's deep.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
