If it is sexually mature, usually it's the size of the cloaca that determines the sex.
The toe tips are a good indicator of sexual maturity, but the size and age also play a role.
Generally if it's around 5 inches long or larger, and around 8 months old.
Sometimes they're younger, smaller, older or larger before they mature; it really depends.

This one appears to be female, but I say 'appears' to be, based on the view I can see of it's cloaca and knowing nothing else about it.

There is a thread on sexing them; possibly a few of them. If you search for them and read up on it, you'll have a better chance at determining what it is than I could guess for you.

Cheers.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
