Hello,

I have what I thought were three Axolotl's, however one has started to change quite a bit. Feathers have disappeared, tail is rounding out, and is spotted. What do you all think is going on?

Thanks

You need to get a terrestrial setup ready ASAP. You probably have tiger salamanders, but I'm not over familiar with them so I can't say for certain but someone else on the forum more knowledgeable will probably reply soon. Regardless you definitely have salamanders of some kind transitioning to being terrestrial.

I do currently have another area for that little one to get to that should be up and running tonight.

Looks like a tiger to me. You should provide a ramped land area and see. I bet he'll start staying out of the water and that'll tell you for sure.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
