Hello all! So I've had my axolotl, Andrew, for a few months now. I got him when he was quite small and he's grown quite a lot since! I've just been referring to him as male to avoid confusion, but I feel that he's big enough now that I should be able to tell his sex, but I simply don't know. Is my axie male of female? Thanks! (forgive me for the poor picture quality)

How old is he? I don't believe you can tell really till they're a year old, till then they all kind of look female.

I'm not really sure how old he is, because I don't know how old he was when I first got him. He's about 4 inches long rn. I've had him for a couple months (thanks for the quick reply btw!)

Hi ya, generally it's tough to sex them at this size but having said that it does look like your axolotl may be developing male genitalia. (Slight bump behind back legs) I guess the only way to really tell is buy keeping an eye on him? To see if he develops.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
