Parts degenerating

I have this small golden axolotl who I got injured.
He was missing a leg and part of its tail. Where the leg was there was a small, thin piece growing back but it seemed to stop regenerating after a while.
Because of the way he acted inside the tank and me wanting to follow him up more closely, I put him in a separate small box.
For a while now I noticed he stopped eating and didn't poo either. A couple of days ago however he did poo. I was quite glad to see that and hoped that that was what was bothering him.
But still he doesn't eat and ever since that one poo, he hasn't poo'd anymore.

I also noticed that there were pieces, really tiny ones in the box from his skin and thought that was due to regeneration. I couldn't tell where it came from and everything still looked "untouched". He still had that little stick-like looking leg where he was missing his leg. And his tail was the same as well. It kind of looked like "scales", like how a snake sheds its skin ... kinda.

There was also a time where he kept floating on top. He literally went to the top, gasp up some air and stayed there. Now he stopped doing that and it also seems as if he does act a bit more lively than before.
However the part that was regrowing is gone and his tail has started to lose tissue as well.
The rest of his body seems fine. There's no slime or anything either. There's nothing that looks like it could be infected. It just looks as if part was bitten off .... again, even tho he's alone in the box.

I clean out his box once or twice a day. And feed him at the same time that I feed my other axolotl. But as I said, he doesn't eat :(
Not sure what to do.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
