Please excuse me if this has been answered before, but I'm new to caring for axolotls and I'm wondering if mine is bloated. It's been acting normal, eating regularly and swimming around the tank fine, but it appeared to balloon a little one night. I'm not sure if it's actually sick or it's something else. Please let me know if I should be worried. I've been checking the water conditions regularly and they all check out and it's tank mate is doing fine.

Based on the pictures and your description, it seems to me like a healthy axolotl. Do you know if it's a female? Compared to males, they are typically a little wider around the middle. I wouldn't worry, but keep an eye on it just to be safe. Best of luck! :)

Keep an eye on him, maybe he ate more than usual?
What is it that you feed him with, and what are your water temperatures like at the moment ?
If he gets bigger, could you add another photo so we can see.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
