I.U. axolotl colony sells Rangen salmon pellets not trout pellets. Salmon pellets are soft moist and sink. Trout pellets are usually hard and float. I use Salmon pellets for axolotls and ribbed newts.

The only thing I don't like about trout pellets is that they leave an oil slick on the water.

With Rangen though you have to buy 40 pounds. It not the expense, as much as the shipping. I bought 40 lbs. 3 years ago and still have plenty. I store them in air tight containers.
Axolotls and Ribbed newts really like them, even the larva that are large enough eat them. My T. karelini will sometimes eat them as well.

Here in the UK you can buy a variety of sizes of trout pellets from pet food stores.
Some of these have a high oil content which leave the slick that Ed mentions, others are dry, hold together for a long time underwater and can be removed if not eaten without messing up the water.
Not many of the newts inside will eat the pellets, but out in the garden ponds where times are harder for the newts, they go mad for them.

I feed trout pellets not only to aquatic newts(alpestris and pleurodeles) but to my marmoratus and salamandra as well. The make is Hikari and I've never noticed an oil slick on the water.

The 44 lb bag of soft moist salmon pellets from Rangen is a real bargain. If you need smaller amounts you can purchase about 10oz. bags from the axolotl colony or Frog Pond. Rangen salmon pellets have a long shelf life.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
