Does anyone out there keep the northern two lined salamander (Eurycea bislineata), or the jefferson salamander (I. havenoidea)?

Those are both really common around where I'm from. I always used to find them as a kid but never kept them because the one time I tried to keep one (northern two lined) it escaped.

What kind of setup do you use? What do you feed them? I probably won't try to keep one for a few years, but I'm just curious.

I keep jeffersons. I use a general ambystomatid enclosure with topsoil and half-cup caves and a water dish. I have some pothos ivy, but no plants otherwise.

check out some of the enclosures and information on these guys at Caudata Culture -

If you have specific questions on what you read there, most definitely ask away... it's just hard to give good detailed answers to very broad questions, when most of it is already written out here on the site.

By the way - Jefferson is an easy one Ambystoma jeffersonian

The link Kyle gave has a very good caresheet for Eurycea. The caresheet for tiger sals might be helpful for the Jeffersons. You might also want to check out the article on preventing escape. Come on back with any specific questions

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
