My daphnia tubs are very simple affairs, being just plastic containers, filled with water, left out in the garden, nothing added except the daphnia themselves.
These tubs are then left to it until too many leaves, etc, have fallen into the tubs, making the water smell, and making it impossible to net out daphnia without ending up with a net full of detritus.
Well this morning I decided it was time to clear out my smaller tub[18inch in length].
The water looked so bad that I was going to tip out and restart, until I noticed something swimming around in the water.
On further inspection I found 28 small smooth newt larvae, all doing great in the tub.
There are no plants in my tubs, and I have 3 ponds in the garden, so why a female newt had decided to climb into a tub, lay eggs, then climb out again Ive no idea.
20 of the larvae were transfered to my ponds, and Ive brought in 8 to raise inside for a while.
