Newts hibernation

Hi,
I'm interested in newts hibernation places. Maybe somebody knows something about this and could help me? For example, what are the differences of Triturus vulgaris and T.cristatus hibernation places?

If they are kept in captivity I don't think they will hibernate unless it is very cold. Do you mean you want information for newts in the wild?

Hi and welcome,
often you can hibernate T. dobrogicus in the water, and I think you can treat T. cristatus in a similar way. Many T. vulgaris individuals hibernate in the soil, but some enter the water in late autumn - I have often watched this in the garden pond of my parents. But I think the hibernation out of the water is better for them in captivity.
Have you already read the caresheets of caudata.org? They are better than most books.

Hi and welcome,
Both T.cristatus and L.vulgaris hibernates on land in Sweden - the water that they breed in often freeze so that would not be an option in many cases. I would recommend searching for scientific articles on the area. Try pubmed.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
