"Spring lizards" -- salamanders as bait

I've posted some info and pics in the past showing how some Asians use salamanders for food or medicine here in the East. Since these may have given some people (and I'm not including Nate among them

) the impression that Asians are especially cruel in this respect, I thought I'd balance the scales by passing along some info on how salamanders are used in the "civilized" West.

The info and images here are from a book entitled "Fishing with Live Bait".

I have an article that dicusses an easy way of catching D. quadromaculatus by fishing for them with barbless artificial flies.....

About 26 years ago, I purchased my first tiger salamander at a bait shop in Henderson, Nevada for 74 cents.....

Yep, they sell tigers as bait in Nebraska too---that's where I got my pet as well.

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
