Which species is right for me?

Hi, I currently have a spare 20 gallon long aquarium and should be acquiring a four inch high land piece with waterfall, stream, & filter if all goes well. It was mine, then I passed it to my little brother with fire bellies, then my mom gave it away. Anyways, if I do get this back in working or fixable condition, what species of newt or salamander would be appropriate for the setup? The water would be about 4 inches deep and the land adjustable from half to 1/3 the aquarium. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, David

Thanks! Should my tank be limited to one species? Which ones will utilize both the land and water the most? Will I be able to keep a few fish in with these (even if they can be meant for food)?

Regarding the setup, what is the water temperature (winter/summer)? And is the lid 100% escape-proof?

Ghost shrimp and white cloud minnow are about the only tank companions I would recommend. And definitely, only one species of newt.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
