Just wanted to thank everyone here for their advice, support and inspiration. This past weekend was totally devoted to my newts; I spent 3 hours on friday going to 5 pet stores buying food and looking around for new cool stuff for their home. Then spent Saturday putting together a new tank stand (although I hate the assembly process, especially when the parts are not all labelled!) and cleaning their tank and moving it to their new location. Anyway, while looking around for neat aquarium stuff, I couldn't help but notice that alot of the stuff sold is either really fake looking or really tacky and I figured I could do better. So, after seeing so many wonderful things here that people set up and made, I took my first baby steps to create something. I purchased a small half-log from one store and used aquarium glue to attach white and black stones to it (to match their white gravel bottom)...I must say, it looks pretty cool and I'm just waiting for the acetic acid smell to fade (its been 48 hrs) before putting it into their tank. The colors are cool and it will provide them with a nice little tunnel/hiding spot. I don't think I would have attempted to do this without all the great things I've seen on this site.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
