I was reading some articles on this site about housing your salamanders and in one I saw a rack system used. It looked like a plastic shelving unit that had been set up for terrestrial salamanders. I have a couple of those I wouldn't mind turning into salamander homes. My question is: How do you provide the animal with an appropriate photoperiod? Wouldn't it be dark in the rack most of the time? I don't think I want my salamanders to think it's nighttime all the time. Is it O.K. because they're nocturnal? Wouldn't that cause problems when trying to breed them by simulating seasons? Thanks a lot for your help.

I've been using a rack system for years. They do not need direct light, so the photoperiod is not an issue, the diffused light in the room from the natural cycle is plenty.
