Captive breeding of lungless salamanders...

I'm working with Eurycea longicauda for my masters project and I'm trying to test differences in chemical recognition of predators between wild caught and captive bred individuals. Does anyone know anything about getting these little guys to breed in captivity?? I'd appreciate any advice!
 
Hi Leah, I've bred Eurycea multiplicata and Eurycea "tynerensis". Some others here have also bred Eurycea bislineata and E. lucifuga. It seems Eurycea don't really require any special effort to breed, just a decent simulation of their natural spring habitat.

My advice would be to buy a medium to large aquarium with floor area being the premium, not actual volume and fill it with about 2-4 inches of water. Then make a seepage of water flowing down a pile of rocks with an internal canister filter or powerhead. Litter the floor with large rocks breaking the surface, especially rocks with existing natural vegetation on them from your collection site.

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
