All amphibians are endothermic, meaning their body temperature comes from the environment, and all salamanders must keep their skin moist by hiding in moist areas under damp objects. As for the newly terrestrial adult, most newts become terrestrial when there is either low availability of water or the water is dirty, and some just do it after the breeding season is over. Others, like newts east of the Mississippi river, are born as aquatic larvae, then move to land as juveniles, and then permanently back into water as long as the aquatic habitat is still suitable.
