Hi, i'm thinking of getting a fire salamander but am not sure about a few things.

Firstly, can they be fed dried mealworms? I found them in a garden centre that sells them to give to birds but am not sure if fire salamanders can have them.

Also where do you buy them from?

Thanks Jake

if you want a fire salamander then read this:

http://www.caudata.org/cc/species/Salamandra/Salamandra_sp.shtml

you really need to feed them live foods. earthworms are my personal favourites and i think my animals agree too!

http://www.pollywog.co.uk has a good selection in at the moment. they retail at anything from £20 upwards depending on the subspecies. occasionally you might find a private breeder selling them and they tend to be a little cheaper. check the wanted section!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
