I have a tank cycling for a mudpuppy right now and i have Elodea in it for the time being. I know that Elodea need a lot of light but mudpuppies don't. So I was wondering if I need to toss the Elodea before i get the mudpuppy and use some fake plants that I have lying around, or can i keep the Elodea and have the light on in 12 hour intervals? If i can't do either what are some live plants that use little or no light?

if you mean an aquarium light, then I think you'll find you can keep elodea alive on much less than 12 hours/day.

I have elodea in a tank and the light isnt on 12 hours and its growing new shoots and stuff, so I dont think you have to get rid of it

My opinion is keep the elodea in there, I saw the pic of your tank and it will look great when it starts to fill out and grow

Any of the Anubias genus of plants require very little light and nearly indestructable. You should be able to find some at your local pet store.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
