One of my fire salamander is looking sick..
His skin is dark and dull, Anybody seen this?
Know what to do about it?
I have seen it before but I don't know what to
do about it..
Salamander stops eating and eventually dies
with sores..

Acidic substrate? Peat moss?

It doesn't seem like a fungus to me, maybe just a problem with shedding (which is usually an indicator of some underlying problem, but the underlying problem could almost be anything).

Ya so the substrate should be fine.Changed regularly.Other salamander in same tank is fine..As are other salamanders in other tanks with same substrate.
I do agree it is a shedding problem but what should I do to get the skin to come off?

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
