I have a free tank in my home.. a 2.5 gal with a nice filter and build to it. I'd like to transform it into something to hold a newt or salamander of decent size, but while researching found it better to ask someoen with experience these questions.

is there any variety or species of newt, dwarf or otherwise, that can fit in a tank of this size. I onlywant one, not two or several. If anyone can offer any advice concerning if its possible or if I shuold give up, please let me know.

No. I wouldn't put any caudates in a tank that small. For terrestrials, it would not be a lot of room to move around, and in an aquatic tank, it would be very difficult to maintain good water quality. You might want to try some small fish, or african dwarf frogs?

You could put a bette (fighting fish) in there, and it would be very happy.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
