Temps too cold for my newt!!!!

I know that my california newt prefers the colder temps, but is there a such thing as it being too cold. The water in his tank is ice cold, really cold, and he seems very sluggish and sometimes doesn't move at all. I heard the temperature being too low could be the cause of this. Can anyone help?

Remember that newts are wild animals and do live outdoors until humans intervene. It's doubtful that your pet has water thats below the "too cold" mark, unless you're keeping it in the freezer. Room temperature water is usually not as cold as it feels.

Most newts are very sluggish and don't move much unless its feeding time. It's their nature. Cool temperatures slow metabolism even more, making them slower yet.

It doesn't do any good to discuss temperatures without an actual number. Check it with a thermometer, I bet it'll be a lot warmer than you think it is!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
