Can anyone identify this salamander?

looks like one of the dusky (Desmognathus)types, that is a hard call from the photo. i am guessing you didnt collect it yourself because you say its from unknown origin-duskys do make it onto the pet trade (in the south they are even sold as bait). better shots would make a more positive identification possible.

No, I did not collect it myself. It was given to me by a family that didn't want it any more. They claim it came from Central America, but won't provide any other info. I'll work on getting better shots of it. I would like to get a positive ID on it and pursue finding a mate/companion for it. Thanks for responding!

If it is from central america then it would have to be a Bolitoglossa species the slightly pinkish arms makes me lean towards B.subpalmata! Does it use it's tongue like a chameleon when it feeds? and does it use it's tail to grip onto things?

Hey,Ben-
It has never been observed feeding by me or the previous keepers, so I cannot answer that part of your question. On the rare occasion when I must handle it, it does wrap its tail around a finger. Why the exclamation point? Is B.subpalmata rare or something?

Is it common for salamanders to alter their color like that of a chameleon?

I would need to see a picture from the side but it does not look like a bolitoglossid. It does look a lot like a desmog (particurly as the tail looks to be keeled).

From that picture I am leaning towards one of the Dusky salamanders or a seal salamader.

Maybe Nate has an opinion?

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
