Newts Basking?

A few days ago, I installed a new light bulb 75 W in my tank for plants. I thought my CFBNs were nocturnal but I found them hanging onto the plant just below the water surface under the bright light, just the way reptiles bask. Is this normal as CFBNs are supposed to be nocturnal?

Hey you should watch the amt of light you give, my CFBNs prefer it dark and also too bright lights will heat up the water. My newts do that at night too, the basking, they stay near the water surface whilst they sleep. gives em easy access to gulp air. should be normal. get other opinions though.

PS: Try to use plants like Java moss and Java fern that can tolerate low light intensities.

Check the temperatures in your tank and make sure the new bulb has not pushed them up above 24C/75F, otherwise, this could be a stress response.

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
