so now that my siren has died i am wondering how long i can expect my firebelly newt to last. he has been with me since 1990 and is mighty tough (a roommate stepped on him once and split his neck open but he mended up just fine). his mate passed away about a year ago but i still have one of their offspring too. junior is about 12.

There are reports of Japanese firebellies (pyrrhogaster) living 50 years in captivity. I've heard from 2 different people who claimed to have had theirs 25-30 years. If he's pyrrhogaster, he could still be with you for a long time!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
