Shedding or sick?

Waffle hasn't been looking so hot lately. He's been sleeping a lot and not very active at all. He looks a little greyish in color (He's an FBN)

The other day I noticed that he as a very thin sheet of skin or something peeling off around his neck. It hasn't come off yet, and there hasn't been any more of it. I noticed too that he has a pocket of this skin under his chin as well, that looks a lot like a blister.

What is this? Is he just shedding, and if so, how long will it take? Or is it something else like parasites or illness?

I wish Mr. Blik would come out from hiding so I could see if he had it too.

Thanks in advance.

I'll be moving this thread soon to the Newt and Salamander Help section of the site so please look for it there if you don't find it here

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
