LOL ok well im finding that the last day or so my firebelly has been trying to get underneath the gravel, and getting under the large stones I have in the tank without too much luck- There's plenty of hiding spaces in there so im thinking maybe he just wants something nice to dig himself into.. Anybody have any suggestions what i can use? Im gonna put some java moss on the substrate as a start.

You may try to put some plants in their as well as moss, right now it is winter in my region and my newt spends no time in water at all unless i make him. However, he responds well to the plants and even climbed up the side to see what was up today. I think the newt can be much happier with a broader range of environment.

Whenever I've seen my newts doing that it's because an earthworm, planarian, bloodworm, or anything else they would eat, is buried in the gravel. Firebellies aren't too successful at this most of the time because they're small and usually not strong enough to move the gravel, so they can spend hours perplexed over a small bloodworm, eventually they loose interest.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
