Red Efts Terriarium - Need water fixture?

Hello. I'm new to the forum and interested in keeping red efts. I have three questions. One is if I need to have water in their tank (for them to swim). The other is what I should use for bedding. Also, what kind of top is the best for their tank? Glass, screen, other?

Thanks.

They should definitely have some water to keep moist but red efts are mostly terrestrial so their land area should be greater than their water area. Try some moist leaves (I love java moss) and places to hide for their land area....think about walking around in the woods...get some rocks, branches- they'll like that. With regard to the tank top, I have both a screen top (MUST be tight fitting so newts can't escape) for day and overnight use and then a regular tank top (with lights, hinged door) for evening use. Screens are good because they allow evaporation which can keep the water cooler.

Okay, thank you. I kept some of the adults a few years ago and wanted to try the efts!

I have a ten gallon tank that's not in use currently, so I figured two efts would be an interesting project.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
