Hello. Does anyone know what kind of fire belly this is ? I bought him at the pet store but it said it was a fire belly newt and did not say what kind. Also does anyone know how much bigger it will get as well as if it is a male or female ? thanks.

Hi Sandra
The pictures are not very clear but it looks to me like a female Chinese fire belly newt and that is about as big as they get.
Good luck

A belly shot would clear up any confusion. From the looks of it, its a pretty big chinese fire belly.

I agree, Chinese firebelly (Cynops orientalis). I would guess it's male, but I'm notoriously poor at sexing them. Hopefully someone else will provide the tie-breaking opinion

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
