About Laying Eggs

Hi,

My female newt gave birth to 15 eggs about 4-5 weeks ago. They were growing and everything and none of them looking white or anything. It's now been this long and they are still brown solid circles and very large - but they haven't hatched yet. Is this normal? I htought they took only 2 weeks to hatch. The eggs look healthy and have no white milky stuff on them. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks
Greg

Try to give us as much information as possible. Say, how about the temperature?

The one that gave birth is (i think) one of those worty newts with an organge belly. (looks like a crocodile newt). The water temperature is about 20C. I don't know what else you want to know. The water level is about 2-3inches. They have many plants and a large rock that they are able to hide under, and they have a hollowed out log to hang out in.

They look more like the Paramesotriton hongkongensis kind.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
