I just found out that i have paddletails and a japanese fire bellied mixed in one tank. i can't the fire belly out tonight, but i have seen him getting into a lot of fights. at first when i was oblivious to their species, i took out the big one(paddletail) and thought that maybe she was gravid and agressive because she needed to lay eggs (if u can't tell already, i don't have much experience with newts)in a safe spot. then i was informed that three were paddletails. anyway, my question is, will they be safe in the same tank overnight, and does anyone have experience with paddletails because i only researched firebellies (thinking they were the kind the pet store had). basic questions-what do they eat, where do they live, how do you breed them, how do you sex them, and how can i keep them from fighting with each other? i'm furious with the pet store who gave the worng information because not only did they mix them at the store, but they told me that i could put them together because they were the same species. i even spent a lot of money (I don't think you want to know how much)to get them all the luxuries they need and now they almost tore each other up! i should have looked into the pet store a little bit more, but i am new at this. help!

Its never a good idea to mix species Kathrine, its better to err on the side of caution.

From what Ive read and from what other people have told me, Paddle tail newts are very aggressive. I think Paris is having a bit of trouble right now with hers that she just got last week. Separate the newts and lets hope that they all survive!

ya man separate them right away, exspecially if the paddletail is beatin up on the firebelly. Firebellies are not aggresive and yours will most likely be in pretty bad shape in the morning if it keeps getting beat up. Tank in out right away. If you dont have a tank, just get a large tuppaware container and give him some land a some water and that should be good for a overnight holding tank. As far a breeding goes, I dont know much, just wait for someone else to tell you. Good Luck.

It's way too soon for you to worry about breeding them, as you have some much more serious issues to deal with. Basic sexing information can be found here:
http://www.caudata.org/cc/articles/sexing.shtml

You MUST keep the firebelly separate from the paddletail(s). In fact, paddletails are so aggressive that they often have to be housed individually, not in groups.

A lot of your other information is in the FAQ here:

or in the caresheets here:

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
