Color changes

Has anyone noticed their newts changing color at all? One of my nvv newts was a darker shade of green, but has lightened up the last few weeks. The other one started out lighter and has gotten darker. (I'm not confusing the 2, they definitely have changed shade.) Is this normal? Does it depend on season/weather? Could they be sick? Thanks for any input.

Karen, most of mine change due to light, but they can make long-term shade variations too. If it's dark, they get pale. If it's bright, they're dark. I doubt it's anything to worry about, but still (always!) keep a diligent eye out for signs of illness.

If it's a red eft your talking about it's common at the adult age. But they start to adapt to the water and from then on known as the red spotted newt though.I know this because I had one once even though it died before it reached the adult age.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
