Food for young spotted salamander

I have a spotted salamander that recently completed its metamorphous from larva to adult. I was wondering what I should feed it. I have heard about foods like earthworms, crickets, etc., but these seem too big for his little mouth; he is still relatively small (only about three inches long). Any recommendations?

Hi Robert....when my newts were as small as yours must be, I used to feed them with small peaces of chicken! And when they where in the water I used frozen bloodworms...

fruit flies, pinhead crickets to crickets about 1/8" long, chopped earthworms

I have a new spotted morph myself and it eats chopped pieces of night-crawlers almost exclusively. I've also had good luck with live black worms; both are given and readily taken from tweezers.

I fed my marmoratus exclusively on live blackworms for the first few months after metamorphosis and experienced no problems.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
