Where to find salamanders/newts around a pond...?

I have a pond in my yard, and I was wondering where to find salamanders or newts there. Where do they live around ponds? I don't really have logs or rocks to look under, is there anywhere else I can look for them? And also, is it too early in the season for them to be out?

If you don't have anything for them to hide under, chances are they're not around.

The best time to look for them is at night when it rains.

Although they could still inhabit and breed at a pond without cover objects in surrounding areas, they will likely spend most of their time underground. Thus, if you are looking for them, you will probably need to do visual surveys for them among any vegetation the pond has. Hope you find something!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
