I purchased 3 about 1 month ago. The respective lengths are 12, 14, and 18 inches. Can anything be infered about thier ages from this or do they have significantly varying growth rates like axolotls do? Also, the largest one has shown a fairly significant increase in girth, I think it's a female so I will be setting up another tank just in case. I have read that babies need higher temperatures for a couple of months. Is there anything else I might need to know? Unfortunately my computer does a minor crash every time I try to log on to the caecilian web-site so if there are other sites I can look for information on I'd love to know. Otherwise I'll just keep asking basic questions here and hope for your patience.

Hi Sara,
As with other amphibians growth is food dependent. If they were cb then I would say they are at least 18 months old. If the "female" is gravid it takes around 11 months for gestation to be complete. There was an article on T. natans in Reptilia last year.

My male has developed a pinkish lump on his head aprox. 3 mm in diameter. I think it may be an abcessed bite from one of the others. does anyone know what antibiotics would be safe to use on these guys?
Ed, thanks for the info so far, I am looking for the Reptilia article.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
