in my opinion a power filter is the best. the only prob would be that you would have lessen the current of the filter.

My big tanks are all hooked up to minireef filters. I swapped for all of them and custom fitted them. They are expensive if purchased new. Some sort of power filter with lots of biological filtration is good. I'd stay away from under gravel. Of course I stay away from the gravel.

At work we tend to use Magnum 330 filters on all of our aquariums less than 55 gallons in volume. We have had little to no problems with these filters, the only real drawback is that the filters need to be below the level of the water to operate efficently.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
