Great looking tanks there. I've just bought a tank and Im in the process of dividing it to have a terestrial section of it, but I was wondering what to use for that, suggestions have been compost, coco-something or other (mulchy type stuff that comes in a brick that you soak and expands), I'd like to have a plant too, but don't know what newts like. Love some advise.

Mark, looking good.

Billie, it's not clear in your post... are you looking for suggestions of how to divide the tank (i.e., how to keep the soil separated from the water), or what kind of substrate to use? If you use soil, you do need some good solid division between the soil and the water areas. It is often easier just to use plants that don't need soil. If you haven't seen it already, this might help get you started:

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
