Tiger salamander duplex enclosure

Well, it didn't take much $$, but it did require 2 clear plastic tubs, some duct tape, a 5" diameter pvc pipe, and a borrowed digital camera from a friend....Fatboy seems to enjoy spending time in both of his houses, connected by the pvc pipe "walkway".

Both enclosures together end up being over 5 feet long, 16" wide, and 16" tall, and I cover them with BBQ grills so the cat doesn't use the dirt for a litter box.....

Very nice set-up, have you thought about getting 'Fatboy' a mate?

Actually, yes I would like to get Fatboy a boyfriend (since it's a "she" actually, but I was calling her Fatboy before I learned how to tell the sex!)...wonder where I can get a tiger in TN---I had to get Fatboy from a bait shop in Nebraska, where I'm from, but I live in Tennessee now and there are no tiger sallies to be seen. But every other kind of salamander is in these parts, just about!

Do you keep a lid on there? Or do you not have to worry about her climbing out?

Actually, I do have a lid---more for the cat not to get IN and use it as a litterbox than Fatboy to get out, heh!

If im not mistaken, I would assume that the humidity level must be pretty low with no lid of any kind. Do you mist the setup and soil at all?

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
