That's a cute one.

Sexing them is easier after they reach adulthood, because the females are much more round that the males due to the placement of their ovaries, while the area around the male's cloaca grows large, looking like testes.

if its over 8 inches theres a good chance its female. if its male you'll see a more swollen cloaca as it reaches maturity. it would almost look like a lumpy bag around the anal opening.
i find the cloaca swells in males at around 8 inches. im not quoting anything iv'e read, just an observation.
yours is very attractive.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
