Maybe you could teach it to bark and be a good guard-newt, Tim.

Hope you keep it separately since they really "love" their siblings.

There coming along nicely.
Do you use filters with your larvae and eggs?

Er, Ralf, I don't keep it separately

...but I counted them today and there are still seven. I think before I said eight, but that's the number that hatched, and one probably was cannibalized early on. I keep them well fed, so hope they won't engage in any anti-social behavior like say swallowing their siblings

But do you really think they'd engage in cannibalism at this late stage? Their gills are still quite large so I guess I have a couple weeks to go before they morph.

Mark, yes, it seems so. They've proven to be very hardy. As for filters, yes, I used them before with larvae, then stopped for a while after hearing the methods used by others, but have resumed using them. Better safe than sorry! As for eggs, well, I used to use filters but now just do daily or twice daily water changes

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
