You really should feed them something else then cheeseburgers Tim !
Hehe...well, I started with around 15 and I still have around 15, with no cannibalism occurring even though this species has a reputation for it. The trick has been to keep a constant supply of alternative food available.

Chris, I do know the locality on Hokkaido Island where they came from, which is Abashiri. But no, I'll be keeping them and hopefully breeding them in the future. I'm very fond of this species. I have a female raised from an egg that became gravid this year, so I hope to have my first breeding next season.

What are the measurements of these metamorphs? What sort of setup do you use for Hynobius larvae and metamorphed individuals? Lovely specimens I must add!

Shane douglas:with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??+1

Thorninmyside:Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation+1

Clareclare:Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?+1
