The shelter for my mudpuppy takes up a lot of room in my tank (its 3 large granite stones, you can see it in the tank photo area under the thread my tank (better pictures)) and i want to use something else. What is used by you guys, i was thinking a flower pot but im not sure. Thanks

I have seen people use flower pots successfully as caves. Just make sure they are new so there is no chance of fertilizer embedded in them from a previous plant host. Also, maybe want to break out the bottom a little but so it can swim all the way through them.

PVC pipes work well(white or black) and you can get them at any hardware store in various shapes in sizes. Just make sure their is now glue on them.

I use rocks and sinking driftwood. That is what adults use as shelters in the wild.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
