Neotenic Ambystoma Gracile

While cleaning their pond last week, a friend of mine found this:

My best guess (or worst guess) is that this is a paedogenetic Ambystoma Gracile. This individual is around 8 inches" total length. Feel free to let me know what you think it is!

There are others in this (privately owned) pond. You can see them (large and small) at night when you shine for them. They had cut down Alder trees (which fell in the pond) last year. The branches of these trees are loaded with A.g. egg masses. The owner's decided not clear the pond out so the eggs can hatch. The pond used to be 12' deep, until one end caved in. It is now around 2-3' deep. So there is most probably a neotenic population still residing in the pond. It is soooo exciting to see these sals, and KNOW that they are there.

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
