Hi,

is there anybody interested in mexican plethodontids at this forum?

Eike

I am, but they aren't exactly easy to come by, even pictures of them are pretty rare. =/

Me too,
I had Pseudoeurycea leprosa and a Chiropterotriton-specie for many years, but they never bred. Do you know if there were any captive breedings?

Eike

Hi Eike,
The only captive breeding (that I am aware of) for a bolitoglossid was documented for B. mexicana and was published in Salamandra.

I think Dr. Lynne Houck did some early work with bolitoglossids but some (if not all) was with hormonal inducements to lay the eggs.

There is also one (excellent) report of Thomas Mutz on captive breeding of Hydromantes (Speleomantes) imperialis, fairly closely related to Bolitoglossa but, unfortunately for most of you, in German. Because this is quite a large forum: how many people actually have healthy groups of Central and South American plethodontids? The only one, more or less regularly imported species into Belgium appears to be B. dofleini, which has experienced a terribly high mortality rate.

Hi Frank,
For the longest time, the only group I was aware of in the states was at the Philly Zoo with a goup of 0.3 B. mexicana and a group of five B. dolflini. We had these salamanders for a number of years until the keeper whose area they were assigned to for exhibit lost them (missing presumed dead).
I know the Baltimore Aquarium has a B. mexicana in its collection. Those are the only extant ones I am aware of in the Zoo community here in the USA.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
