Paramesotriton chinensis

Hi,

yesterday I had something to buy in a big market for tools, stones, plants, bolts .... (called OBI).
They build up a new part for Terraristik.
There I found this:

Clearly chinensis I think.

Yeah, I can't imagine it being anything else. It even has the tell-tale spots between the joints.

I agree. However, the animals seem to be in a pitiful shape and severely malnourished.

Nice find! I’m sure Paul will have them looking healthy in no time. In the first photo the dorsal stripe almost looks like the beginnings of a crest. Is this ridge simply because the animal is skinny or is there normally a dorsal ridge?

*Must pop to B&Q to see if they’ve started selling caudates*

Hi,

I did not buy it, but asked to take some photos.
The P.c. was kept together with Cynops pyrrhogaster and Bombina orientalis and was very thin.
Not a good thing to sell newts in those shops. The personnel was very kind, but did not know what they sell there. When I asked to make photos from the Paramesotriton chinensis, they made great eyes and did not understand me.

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
