I know with my golden his gills get litter when he dosen't move. When he get moving around they get real pink. I think some one on here saying that their wild got lighter with age. When I got my golden he was solid white now he's golden. I think as long has he dosen't have fungus or some thing I think he is fine. Could he of changed colour over a little time and you just noticed it cause you used to seeing he every day? Gulping air a few times a day is fine eating is fine also. Mine changes when he wants to eat last week he ate 3 cubes a day for 3 straight he's about 9 inches he goes sprits.

My big guy for about 8 months my new little babies about a month. I would just keep a close eye on him as long as he is eating acting normal I wouldn't worry to much. When I first got cracker pet shop told me to put him in tropical tank. He was in with clown loaches barbs you know the type that can be mean ate all his gill wasen't eating. Now he eats like a pig and is huge with the right care. Gills look better then when I got him.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
