Hi Guys

A few days ago I saw two tanks of axies in a pet shop nearby. They are supposedly a "specialist" pet shop but these tanks were full of axies that looked really skinny and several had missing limbs from underfeeding. One of them had a missing front leg and had such a cute face that I decided to go back for it today. I went back and the first thing I saw was the little guy sat at the bottom of the tank - legs and arms all gone and obviously dead. Looked like he had been there a day or 2. In the tank next to him - yet again another axie - this time floating at the surface on it's side and looking very white -no movement at all. Just a few days previous a wild one was in the same tank dead at the botom with missing limbs. The tanks were pretty dirty and obviously hadn't been cleaned in a while.

I want to make a complaint to the relevant people as soon as the easter holidays are over because I was just so angry.

Before I make a complaint I would like to know - does the fact that 2 were found at the bottom and one floating at the top mean that they died from a different reason - or were they just at different stages - ie the ones at the bottom had been there longer or vice versa ?

I wish I had got there sooner :-( :-(

I wanted to buy the little pink guy last week but didn't have much mney spare. But today I got some money as a birthday present from my mum so went straight there to get him :-(. I was so mad at myself !!!!

I want to make sure this shop can't get in any more axies. There other pets seem fine but the owner and staff I regularly heard saying that they hated axies as they were so vicious, and several times I commented that they weren't giving them enough food and they were VERY badly overcrowded !!

Grrrr !!!

yea its anoying but most of the time they just dont care
and axies vicious..

at my pet shop every time i mention gravel to the guy he starts telling me people blame the gravel and stuff quite amazing how he wouldnt listen
he also said that on a axalotl forum people just agree with other because they dont know mutch about them...

haha, well i think you need to give that dude at your shop a big slap coffo! people dont agree cause they dont know, most people would speak up if they disagreed with something but when you point out WHY sand is better well... youve gotta be real slow to not see why everyone reccomends it.

karen- maybe contact your local RSPCA and see if they can do anything about it or put you onto people that can?

Hi guys

Yeah the lady I got mine from changed to sand the next day after I told her my guy was having probs eating :)

As it happens Sharn I won't say much but will just say it's being dealt with ... :)

that is so sad- poor wee things!

well it appears that pet shop owners take axies for granted and think they can survive wihout food

like the place where i got mine around wolverhampton (if you live around there) they didnt know hardly amny thing and when they tried putting the axie in a bag they chased him out of the tank then caught him and put him in a big brown envelop big enough for him(you know one of the big ones) and i felt so sorry for the axie(called kal)

Oh that's so sad, Karen! That petshop definatly should stop selling axies, and better still, close down! They are quilty of cruelty to animals.Hope you get some authority to go there, and sort things out. Whereabouts in England is this shop?

You know I'm really fortunate. The shops around here have LOVELY displays - try hard to accomodate all the animals as is appropriate. When I pointed out mudpuppies, axolotls, etc, prefer cold water, not the shallow (2 inchs) tiny gravel with heat lamp setup they had. They changed it. The put the animals in their goldfish setup and laid large pieces of slate ontop of the tiny pebbles.

Just wonderful people. How sad others don't listen.

bruce- did they put it in like a paper bag with no water? if so call your local authorites, thats like putting a dog under water for the trip home!

havent seen any stores (seen about 20 or so) that have kept their axies appropriatly, i make an effort to try tell them about them and their care but ive gone back a few weeks later and its still the same

Darlington..

Their other pets were really well looked after (or seemed to be). Although we did also get a frog which died a few days later.

sharn theyv put the axie in a plastic bag (with water in as usual) and then put it in a very dark brown envelope and said they liked it in their

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
