my axolotl flicks the gills on his head A LOT!! when i 1st got him he hardly did it but now he is always doing it. is it bad?? what does it mean?

sorry if this is a dumb question

and also the skin on his gills are kind of dark (black) not the feathery bits, the skin in front of them.

is that normal?

i think when they flick there gills lots it means that theres not alot of oxygen in the water. i think its normal to have dark skin on the gills.

ok thanks, how do i get more oxygen in the water? i have a filter.
he might be doing it a lot because his gills got a bit damaged when he got fungi.

thanks for your help

put an airstone in there. you will need to get a air pump and air stone. i dont think you really need to get it but it'll save your axie the hassel of flicking its gills i guess. whats the temp of the water? the colder the more oxygen it will have in it.

around 23, yeh i probably won't get that because it will cost me too much, but i wil definatly make the water colder.

thanks soooo much!!

no problem

just so you know, an airstone and air pump is onli about 15 dollers here.

axies will often flick just because, you might have enough air in the tank but theyll still do it hehe, its just something they do

and yeah, airpumps are about 10 bucks here with airstones being like 85 cents so not expensive and yes, your right about cooling the water, 23C is pretty warm, maybe try a fan blowing at the waters surface?

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
