hi

my axolotl is extremely skinny ( i have seen many pics of axolotls on here) he isn't eating, he hasn't eaten in about 5 days, i know that can be normal but its just he is sooo skinny. i have tryed feeding him different foods. he is also very weak wen he goes up for a breathe and sinks back down sometimes he falls on his back and has trouble getting up.
i hav tested the water n it is ok, i live in queensland so it is hot but i put ice blocks in there every now and then and hav air con.

any suggestions pls???

i think you should put him in a container in the fridge. what are you feeding him? do u have gravel in your tank that he may have swallowed by mistake?.

how old is your axie? if hes adult then u should not be feeding 2 times a day.about once every 2 days would be better. 23 is pretty hot but iv had my axies at 24 without problems so i doubt its the temp. did you put him in the fridge yet?, if you do make sure the water only just covers him so he can stay on balance. would you be able to post a picture of him so i can get a better idea of just how skinny he is.

ps. 5 days isnt that long for an axie to go of food. sometimes my axies randomly go of food for a couple of days sometimes a week and then just start eating again. but if hes loosing alot of weight and getting really skinny then there is a problem.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
