my albino axie hadnt eaten for weeks and yesterday its head had swollen to twice the normal size and the underside of it had gone bright red but looked like it was bleeding internally. i took it to a exotic vets but he hadnt even seen one before so he was going to try and find someone who did but was to late i woke this morning to find his head swelled even more and dead?? dont know what has happened? the other axie in the tank seems fine??

Sorry about your axie, I am not sure why it's head would have swelled, someone else may have an idea. But have you tested your water with a test kit? Or if you don't have one take a sample of your tank water to the petshop/aquarium and get it tested.(in case it has something to do with water quality) What is the temp of your tank?

its around 64 degrees F. i havent got a kit but i will have to get one. i have had them about 6 months and they have been fine up until this.

Get one that tests for ammonia, nitrites, nitrates and ph. I use the testtube freshwater master kit. See if your local ps/aquarium can test the water in the meantime take a sample to them and post the results back (will be no.s either ppm or mg I think). Have u added anything new to the tank recently?

I will be off to work soon, so prob won't get another message from me till later, but sure someone else will pop in with suggestions/advice! :D

maybe some sort of internal bacterial problem? not too sure sorry, if you really want to find out what did this see if a lab can do an autopsy

i thought about doing that but was to upset to keep him in the house. he has been buried in my garden in his own little box. just worried that the other one is going to get sick now. i cant find a vet that knows anything about them. is there anywere or anyone that anyone knows of that might know?

it was gravel about a month ago but changed them for big pebbles because he hadnt eaten for so long thought it may have swollen a piece of gravel but nothing ever came out so i will never know if it was that. even if it had swollowed a piece a gravel would all of this happened to it. its head swelling up and the redness?

Just thought you would all like to know that i have spoken to a specialist and my axie died from septicaemia, the redness was internal hemeraging. its now a 50/50 chance to whether my other axie has it to.

Oh,your poor axie,I hope the other is ok,was there any suggestion how to tell?Or prevent it dying?Sorry for your loss, must have been horrible for you

He lost his appetite gradually and then stopped completly eating, on friday his head had swelled slightly, on saturday his whole body had gone red and his head had doubled in size and on sunday morning he was dead so it happened quite quickly but the vet said it could of been happening for months without any symptoms. My other axie is black though so i cant tell if hes going red which is upsetting because the vet has said its likley she will have it so i feel like i am waiting for her to die its upsetting me so much not knowing.

Did the vet have any idea how it might have been triggered? Septicemia is blood poisoning isn't it?

This is whats upsetting because he has given me a list of different things that could of started it but i know that i have cared for these animals 150% so it must of been something that happened before i got them. There is shock, stress, bad husbandary which had an endless list but i know i had everything right. He said its most likly happened due to stress when is been brought over hear and then the stress in the pet shop but i will never know.

This is whats upsetting he gave me loads of reasons to do with bad husbundary but i put 150% care into my axies, it could also of been shock or stress before i even got them.I am an animal care student and i feel so bad that i couldnt help he said that he was to far gone to help but if its caught early enough it can be treated with anti-biotics

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
