Swaying from side to side

Hi everyone, over the last few days Stella hasn't been herself.

Today I have noticed her staying on the top and darting around with part of her head out of the water, and then she has also been kind of rocking from side to side. It's really unusual.

Her gills aren't as fluffy anymore and she's gone a sort of pale colour.

I have noticed Sammy try to bite her a couple of times, but he/she's never actually connected (that I've seen) I haven't noticed any bite marks or anything on Stella. When Sammy bites, he/she sniffs beforehand, as though detecting food.

Anyway, what I'm asking is whether this is normal behaviour, and whether it could have caused Stella to stick to the top of the tank.

your readings are ok? if shes putting her head out of the water maybe something is in there that is irritating her, though youd think the other would do that also...

i know that fish sometimes jump etc when they have parasites... might be worth looking into?

sorry i cant be of more help, id move her to a container with some fresh new water just incase.

You need to check the water chemistry. Anytime anyone sees odd behaviors this is the first thing to check. If it isn't the water chemistry then you need to move onto other possible causes.
Regardless of the cause, the axolotl is exhibiting signs of severe stress and should be isolated from its cage mate.

Unfortunately she didn't make it through the night.

I'm so upset. I feel like such a failure. That's two axolotls gone in the past month.

Thanks for your advice, I just wish that I'd seen her doing this earlier. It all happened so quickly, I didn't have much time to react.

sorry about your loss casey, i lost my favourite pleco last night too

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
